Oven And Stove Repair - Appliance Repair Questions
1.00Any advice with about fixing electrics from smoke damage in electric stove?
Q.I have an electric oven and stove that has an electronic (beeping/lighting) push button stove top - upon accidently burning something in the oven there was a fair amount of smoke which must have gotten into the circuitry for the stove top electrics above. - Would anyone have a guess at what could be done to fix it - any guesses at the cost? - Thank You so much to any one for any help!
A.Hi
For the best possible advice, I highly recommend you contact your local supplier or the Manufacturer...
1.00How to clean up after a grease fire?
Q.Well, I caught my pan of grease on fire but it was just a small one. The only damage there is is grease all over the stove. How would I clean this? I have heard baking soda. When do I start cleaning it up? When I clean the pan, how do I know if the oil is cool enough? Should I leave the kitchen unattended. It has been about twenty minutes now and the stove and oven is off, so is it safe now? Most of all, how will I know if all the grease is off and the oven is ok to use?
A.If you wave your hand around over the stove top you will be able to tell when things have cooled down. Then just clean with a regular kitchen cleaner, most are designed to cut through grease. You'll know the grease is cleaned off because the surfaces will feel 'squeaky' not 'greasy'.
1.00Who can repair a 1930s Wedgewood stove in the Chicago area?
Q.We have an old Wedgewood stove that is a beauty but needs service. The appliance repair shops in the yellow pages won't touch this old Wedgewood. Does anyone know of a specialist or old-timer near Chicago who can service a Wedgewood?
Thanks...
One of the two ovens will not light. The stove is working beautifully in all other respects.
Thanks...
A.Where in the Chicago area are you?
Most likely cause is a clogged gas line or aereator for the non-working oven. Carefully cleaning gas outlets may work. If not, disassembly and cleaning of non-working lines may be needed. Might also try to identify any gas line screens for debreis.
Email me with more specifics.
Good luck.
1.00How do you clean carbon (soot) off a metal camping stove??

1.00Appliance repair?
Q.I have a modern maid gas wall oven #pko191 that is 75 degrees hotter than indicated on the control knob
A.It is hard to give a difinitive answer not knowing how old this oven is.
Most likely unless you can do it yourself any repair is going to be fairly costly. ... say over $100 since you'd have to pay for someone to come out.
An alternative is to get a thermometer for your oven. There is the very inexpensive kind which usually hangs off the rack and you can see through the window or have to open the door to read.d
You can also get a slightly more expensive kind which reads remotely so you don't have to open the door.
Then always make a note to set the oven to 50 or so degrees less than the recipe calls for. Then use the thermometers for a double check as you cook things.
I had to deal with this in an old house I rented some time ago.
best,
cez
1.00220 Volt Wiring Guidance for Kitchen Remodel?
Q.We are remodeling our kitchen. Currently there is a 220 line running to the electric range. We are replacing the range with a built in cook-top and installing a double wall oven on the opposite wall. There is also a wall that has been removed. This presents several questions.
1. The 220 line that will be going to the cook-top needs to be re-routed because the wall it was going through no longer exists. Do we have to replace this line all the way back to the breaker panel, or can we splice the line with wire connectors inside a box to get the extra line need because of the re-routing?
2. Do we need to run a completely separate line from the breaker panel to the new double oven or can we tie into the existing 220 line at some point?
3. For any wiring that needs to be replaced/re-run, what is the best type/size to get for this application?
Thank you!
This work will not be inspected, but I would like for it to be done properly.
The cook-top needs 30 AMPS and the double oven requires 50 AMPS.
We are currently planning on running the existing wire that goes from the breaker box to the range/oven to the new double oven and we will be installing a box so that we can splice a line to the oven for the remainder of the distance needed. We are running a new 10/3 wire from the breaker box all the way to the new cook-top for the 30 AMP service.
I hope this provides some much needed information in order to give a complete answer!
Thank you!
One more thing I may need to figure out. How do I find out if my home has 240V or 208V?
A.You can put the wires in a junction box and add enough cable to run to your stove top....use the same size wire if for nothing else other than safety.....you need to run a new wire to your double oven from the breaker box....you cannot tie both the double oven and the the stovetop to the exisiting wiring because if you were using all the burners and both ovens the old wire and breaker would be overloaded...you can get by with 10/3 with ground and a thirty amp breaker to the stove top but i would use 8/3 with ground myself...and you need 6/3 with ground to the double oven with a 50 amp breaker.....you could have from 230 to 250 volts but not 208 as that usually is only on 3 phase systems... when you make the splices use a device called a split bolt connector as it will make a better electrical splice than a wire nut....nearly all states codes will allow the wire to the stove top to be spliced and anyone who is the homeowner can do the work hisself .....you might have to get a permit in your locality to do the work though....some places might require an inspection but some localities do not require an inspection.....you need to watch prople who verbally abuse others as they use this to make you think what they are saying is the right answer....I have been a master electrician..master hvac tech, certified oil and gas burner tech...appliance tech and pump specialist for 40 years ....our family has been in this business for a combined 95 years.....
1.00How do you remove smoke damage from plastic?
Q.My self-cleaning oven spews smoke up in one little area and the plastic on that part of the stove is now yellow from the smoke. We've tried soft scrub, dish soap, baking soda...any ideas?
A.Vineger and lemon juice try it cleans good
1.00How can we stay warm as a family, energy company turning off power?
Q.The part of Texas i live in is in a new record low, 20 degrees with 10 degree wind chill. It has destroyed power grids and so the emergency energy council of texas has stated to have rotating power outages across texas. For example one area will not have power for 1-2 hours, then the next area, and continue like this until this storm passes which wont be until Saturday. Unless they are able to fix the generators some how. How can we stay warm? Our house is already cold from the last outage and its expected to happen again in 30 mins for 2 hours.
A.If you have a gas stove, there are a couple of things you can do. First of all even if the oven doesn't work because of the electric ignition, you can turn on the stove top burners and light them with a match. This small amount of heat will help keep the kitchen warm and if you boil a pan of water on the stove, the humidity will make it seem warmer. Do not leave the kitchen area unattended while doing this however.
Also, when the power is on, crank up the furnace as warm as you can to get the house really warm in preparation for the shut off of power. It will take longer to cool down.
Bundle up in blankets and put on layers of clothing. 20 degrees is actually not bad for a couple of hours. Here in Missouri every 5 years or so we have a storm that knocks out the power for a few days to a week. I have survived for a week before in 20 -30 degree temperatures, and while unpleasant, I lived through it with the help of my gas stove.

Oven And Stove Repair
You can avoid the need for frequent oven repair and stove repair services by taking the time to keep your gas or electric oven stove and range clean, and looking for signs of any problems. Use a mild dish detergent to clean the buttons and knobs of your oven and stove. Use a damp cloth, and a non abrasive cleaner to clean the surface of the control panel. Glass or porcelain cook tops can be cleaned using a damp cloth, and a non abrasive cleaner. Keep your burner drip pans clean, and replace them at least once in 2 years. Remember to clean around the heating and baking elements, and burner. Look for signs of burning on the burner coils, like blisters and bubbles.
Ovens and stoves are frequently prone to heating, and baking elements that can eventually burn out. Signs of a burnt out element include bubbles and blisters on the coils. Usually these heating elements can't be repaired, and may have to be replaced. The switch that controls the heating element may also be damaged, and will have to be replaced. Any shorts in your switch contacts can create problems in setting the burner temperature. In such cases, the switch must be replaced. Other common electric stove and oven repair problems involve defective clocks. This is more of a problem with non electronic clocks than with electronic ones. Electronic clocks tend to last longer than non electronic ones. However, because these clocks are usually linked with other components like the touch pad or the circuit board, these components may also have to be replaced when the clock is replaced.

I just bought a home and it was bank owned. The bank installed new appliances to sell, but it seems they installed the fridge incorrectly. Will not get cold and styrofoam still attached where I dont think it is supposed to me. I don't want to break anything.
